In the summer of 1997, while on a business trip in Georgia, John
rescued this
little ball of white fluff from the roadside. With no safe place to leave him,
he found a small box, food & water and continued on his business trip.
Shortly before arriving home, John called home from his car and said,
"I've picked up a hitchhiker and I think we're going to have to take care of him for a while."
Our daughter, Beth, and I couldn't imagine what he'd picked up.
John came in with his little orphan wrapped in a towel.
Then the cutest little puppy we'd ever seen looked up at us with one blue and one brown eye.
John said, "His name is Gus." He'd already named him!
Beth and I knew we had another dog! John warned us of the fleas so we tried to bathe him,
but little Gus literally turned black, the fleas were so bad.
He seemed lethargic an just not "right".
So we rushed to our vet who said his gums were too white, probably anemic,
worms and, of course, fleas. We left him for a bath and shots. When we returned,
the entire office had joined the "Gus Fan Club!"
After several weeks of TLC, medicine & vitamins, Gus began to thrive and joined our family, finding his own place among our other pets.

Today, Gus is a true leader of his family. We purchased little Shadow, a sweet
little girl who is friendly and shy. About a year later, she had one puppy... Gretta.
Both Shadow & Gretta show respect for Gus in their submissive manner,
much like wolves in the wild. They all love to run and play and are learning to pull as a team.
I hope to add to my "team" of huskies one day, but Gus will always hold a special place in my heart.
His soft, teddy bear fur makes him irresistible to hug, but that's not
his favorite activity. He's rather aloof, granting only momentary hugs.
I watch him sometimes, wondering what's going on behind those beautiful eyes.
The brown one reflecting his proud, gentle side and the blue one, wild and independent.
He's very special to us and everyone he meets.
He may have been lucky that day John happened by and rescued him, but we are the fortunate ones.
This is a very special Husky!
